Va. Commonwealth upsets No. 17 Oklahoma

(AP Photo/Steve Helber)

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) When Jeff Capel left Virginia Commonwealth to become the head coach at Oklahoma four years ago, his contract mandated that he bring his new team back to Richmond to play the Rams.

Capel received a very warm welcome Saturday night, and then the Rams showed him that things are just fine without him.

Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders 17 and Virginia Commonwealth never trailed in an 82-69 upset of No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday night.

Kentucky tightens 'D' in rout of Rider

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins saw Rider's Brandon Penn pull up from well behind the 3-point line and stretched every last inch of his 6-foot-11 frame in an effort to get a hand on the ball.

Guarding an opponent 22 feet from the basket isn't something Cousins does often. And he plowed into Penn as the ball clanged off the rim, but Cousins' effort perhaps the surest sign that Kentucky coach John Calipari's message to his team that it needed to get serious about defense had come through loud and clear. Read More...

No. 9 Duke hits 18 3s in 104-67 romp

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Duke doesn't have many guards. The ninth-ranked Blue Devils sure haven't lost their long-range touch.

They matched a school record with 18 3-pointers in a 104-67 romp against Radford on Saturday behind a season-high 20 points from freshman Andre Dawkins. Read More...

No. 19 Hoyas cruise past Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Sophomore guard Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points in Georgetown's easy win over Savannah State on Saturday. Hoyas coach John Thompson III called it "irrelevant."

That's because Thompson figures this is really just the beginning for Clark. If he's right, this could be a very successful season for the No. 19 Hoyas, who rolled to a 63-44 win. Read More...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Rick Pitino and the 20th-ranked Louisville Cardinals have a lot to work on and little time to do it.

Freshman Richardson's 15 lift Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) Freshman D.J. Richardson wasn't about to let a hyper-extended shooting elbow slow him down.

Richardson scored 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to help No. 23 Illinois overcome a sluggish start and beat Presbyterian College 94-48 in the Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday night. Read More...

Syracuse hands No. 6 Heels first loss

NEW YORK (AP) Jim Boeheim has always made a point of telling the media not to get too caught up in runs because basketball, especially on the college level, is a game of runs.

He could only smile as he was asked about Syracuse's 22-1 run to open the second half of an 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic. Read More...

Turner, No. 15 Ohio St. beat No. 13 Cal

NEW YORK (AP) Ohio State's two-game visit to Madison Square Garden was inconsistent to say the least. The Buckeyes' best player, however, has been consistent all season.

Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in as many games, and No. 15 Ohio State beat No. 13 California 76-70 on Friday night in the third-place game of the 2K Sports Classic. Read More...
